TJ Johnston is a San Francisco-based journalist whose work has appeared in Street Sheet, Street Spirit, SF Public Press, Newsdesk and Poor Magazine. Other news organizations running his work include The Huffington Post, KQED News, International Network of Street Papers, Shareable Magazine and the Center for Public Integrity.
TJ’s coverage for SF Public Press focused on homelessness as public policy, human interest and civil rights issues. Stories included difficulties clients face in accessing shelter services, enforcement and prosecution of laws against homeless people and hate crimes committed against those for their housing status. Additionally, his work on the disparities of expulsion rates in California’s public schools was recognized in the 2011 PASS Awards.
TJ also covers city government in San Francisco. Among other events, he followed developments in the appointment of a replacement mayor.
